Organization: Feeding America

Ronda Bowen, September 18, 2012December 11, 2021

If you want to work to help eradicate hunger, especially child hunger, Feeding America is an organization worth looking at. On their mission page, they describe themselves in the following way:

“Feeding America is the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity. Our mission is to feed America’s hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and engage our country in the fight to end hunger.”

I’ve been familiar with the organization since my days as a college student, when it was called America’s Second Harvest. There are many ways that one can get involved with Feeding America.

Volunteering at headquarters or at a food bank affiliated with Feeding America involves sorting boxes of food and repackaging things to be shipped around the U.S. You can check on Volunteer Match to see what opportunities are available in your area.

You can also take part in many calls to action – writing letters to representatives, placing calls to senators, and by sharing your own stories of working in your community with others.

For businesses, there are multiple avenues for becoming involved. Becoming a partner, adding the shop to end hunger program (for grocery stores), and cause marketing are all great programs.

You can help the cause of eradicating hunger by sharing statistics on social media websites. This is a great way to help raise awareness about the realities of the hungry in our own neighborhoods.

Those who would like to make a career out of working to eradicate hunger will find that there are many job openings.  opportunities include positions at headquarters in Chicago, Illinois and a variety of positions at local food banks nationally. For those with student loans, if you work with a public service organization for 10 years, your student loans may be forgiven.

In all, this is a valuable organization to be involved with. I strongly suggest those interested in helping their communities look into the above opportunities.
