Movie Classics: The Birds Ronda Bowen, September 19, 2012October 10, 2025 Potter Schoolhouse in Bodega (California), used in 1963 film ‘The Birds’ (Alfred Hitchcock) (Photo credit: Wikipedia) One of the movies that really was memorable for me as a kid was Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 filmĀ The Birds. This film, set in a small Northern Californian coastal town, scared me. I attribute my dislike of large groups of birds to this film. It’s brilliant the way the movie sneaks up on you. Unlike the horror films of today, this film, centered on birds gone wild, has a slow pace that culminates in a climax. While the action is not constant, it creates a sense of psychological terror and wonder that make it a classic. What is your favorite classic Alfred Hitchcock film? Why? I’ve seen so many but “Marnie” is and has been my favorite from the first time I watched it. “Psycho” was my first experience. We all know that is one freaking scary film. I have also seen “The Birds” and I must admit that movie always puzzled me when I was a kid. I wanted to know WHY? That’s never satisfactorily explained anywhere. The ending would freak anyone out though. I wouldn’t have done what they did. I, also, a fan of “Torn Curtain.” More because of the cast then the story. Now that the Wall is down it doesn’t quite hold up. J.K. Jennifer Reply
Excellent, I haven’t seen it, but I’ll have to check it out for sure. Thanks for the recommendation! Reply
ps. I am working on a post about Tippi Hedren that I will release quite soon. Her work in “Marnie” deserved an Oscar or at least a nomination. j.k. Reply
