Patterns for Pirates’ Grandpa Cardi & Cpt. Mack’s Cardis

Who doesn’t love a good cardigan? I know I’m a big fan, and I wear them a lot of the year. When Judy Hale at Patterns for Pirates did a tester call for a cardigan pattern for women and children, I was really excited and had to sign right up. I had some more of the houndstooth fabric left from when I made the Phresh Jeggings, and I figured it would make a great cardigan for my little gal – and – one for myself. This was an easy pattern to stitch up, and the fabric I worked with (from Hancock Fabrics) was amazing. I’ve found myself addicted to their knits, actually. They sew up really nice and feel great. Plus, I’ve found the customer service at our local Hancock Fabrics to be above and beyond what I’ve experienced in the past at fabric store chains.Setting aside my raving about finding fabric that my machine doesn’t want to eat, I love this pattern. You can make it with short, 3/4 or long sleeves, add pockets with bands (or no bands as I did), add a hem band, make it tunic or waist length, and eve add those professorial elbow patches. It’s an easy pattern to make. I have a purple argyle sweater knit that I’m planning to use to make Little Miss another cardigan from, and I have a couple of fabrics hanging out that I was thinking of using for a cardigan for myself. The fit, as always is great on Judy’s designs. I wish I’d graded out to a Plus 3X on the hips though, since they’ve decided they’re going to do their thing while I’m pregnant. But, I wasn’t planning on buttoning the cardigan anyway right now. 

I’ve been loving sewing patterns that allow me to make great basic wardrobe elements to mix and match to make a full wardrobe easily. Later this week, I’ll write up an excellent pattern I was able to test for making tights – and boy have I been making an army of tights for Little Miss.
