Book Review: Adelaide on Broadway by Zoe Twitt

Ronda Bowen, November 2, 2023November 2, 2023

Do you have a kiddo who is nervous about speaking in front of others? Reading Adelaide on Broadway by Zoe Twitt with them may help. This sweet picture book, a follow-up to Adelaide and the Cosmic Rescue Squad by Zoe Twitt is as fun as it is helpful for its social-emotional skills.

Publisher’s Summary:

Join Adelaide and her friends as they navigate nerves and the super duper jittery jitters while performing a play. Adelaide on Broadway features anytime warm-up exercises (like humming, singing and telling funny jokes) designed to help children get calm and centered before performing or speaking in front of others.

About Zoe Twitt

Zoe Twitt is an author of children’s books from Victoria, Australia. She graduated from The University of Melbourne with a creative writing degree. She began writing children’s books shortly after her son Angus was born.

Our Thoughts About the Books

Both Adelaide on Broadway and Adelaide and the Cosmic Rescue Squad are fun and engaging children’s books. The author does a great job of tapping into kids’ insecurities and fears while not talking down to kids (a really important quality to have when you’re writing for children). The other two things I love about the Adelaide books are that they have a QR code on the front to an audiobook version – and that they include meditations to help with those social-emotional learning skills.

Creating a Unit Study with Adelaide on Broadway by Zoe Twitt

The book creates a great opportunity to deep dive into kid-friendly Broadway productions with your young students. Consider going to an afternoon production of a musical theater classic when offered in your area – if you can’t see live theater, you can always check out a video. Depending on the age of your students, Lion King, Hamilton, and Annie are some good introduction.

If you can, signing your child up for a theater class can provide a great way to build confidence – but also can be a great social outlet. Even if your child doesn’t take a lead part, learning to be part of a production is a great skill to have.

Talking about stage fright can also launch into discussions about other areas of life where your child might feel nervous or afraid – or into a study of Growth Mindset or even various feelings and emotions.
