ABOUT LOVE NOTIONS’ ORIGAMI TUNIC & CARDIGAN

The women’s version of the Origami Tunic and Cardigan features three silhouette options: A cardigan, a tunic with a handkerchief hem, and a tunic with a straight hem. You may also choose from a cowl or banded neck and tank, short, 3/4 length, and full length sleeves. The girl’s version is a handkerchief hem with cowl, turtleneck, and neckband options and tank, short, 3/4 length or full length sleeves. The options available make it a nice pattern for the various seasons, depending on the fabric you choose.

ABOUT THE FABRIC I USED

The pattern is meant to be used with light to medium weight fabrics, including cotton jersey, interlock, ponte, and cotton lycra. I had this gorgeous french terry and cotton lycra I got from one of So Sew English’s bundle deals. When I saw the call for the Origami blog tour, I knew that this fabric would be perfect for a mommy and me duo. The floral French terry fabric, in particular, is so soft and cuddly that I could live in it.

I didn’t want Miss Butterfly to be too matchy-matchy with myself (plus I had just enough of the floral to make one or the other), so I made my tunic out of the floral and hers out of the gray. I then made the cowl on mine out of the gray fabric and the cowl on Miss Butterfly’s tunic out of the floral fabric. I really love how they turned out.

SEWING THE ORIGAMI TUNICS

The pattern was straightforward and an easy sew. This would be a great pattern for beginners who want to sew something with straight lines – but who also want a little bit more pizzazz to their project than your average beginners’ project offers. I managed to make both, sans hems, in an afternoon. The hems I saved for a bit later when my husband was available to take over tending the small people, but the directions for making the handkerchief hems were easy to follow.
