In this article, we are going to help you with how to choose low-carb wine and make the most out of your dietary regimen!

What is low-carb wine?

Since wine is made out of fermented grape juice, it inherently contains certain amounts of sugar. Depending on the grape variety, those carb amounts can vary greatly. That is why should you be following a keto diet, you need to be somewhat picky about the type of wine you consume. So, the wine types that are also keto-friendly are those that contain the least bit of carbs, and these are called “low-carb wines”.

How to choose low carb wine

To identify a low-carb, healthy wine, you must always look for certain characteristics that will give you an idea of its sugar content. These characteristics are:

  • Alcohol by volume: This is listed on wine labels in its abbreviation, ABV. It essentially shows how much alcohol (ethanol) is contained in the given volume of the wine. For a low-carb wine, you should choose one that has an ABV of around 13% or less.
  • Residual sugars: This one is tricky because it requires more technical knowledge than usual. You won’t easily find this bit of information on wine labels, but you may find it listed on the winery’s/wine producer’s website. This metric, which is reported in grams per liter (g/L), should be smaller than 10 for a low-carb wine.
  • Taste: If all else fails, you can always judge whether a wine likely has a higher sugar content by its taste. Very sweet and sweet wines, in general, have a significant carb content, while dry wines tend to be on the lower end of the carb percentage spectrum. So, in essence: the drier the wine, the lower on carbs.
