TLC Book Tours Guest Post from Kevin Bannister, Author of The Long Way Home

Ronda Bowen, November 19, 2018November 19, 2018

Today’s post comes from Kevin Bannister, author of The Long Way Home, a historical novel. Enjoy! I was thinking about what freedom means the other day. My historical novel, The Long Way Home (Fireship Press) concerns the search for freedom by ex-slaves and Black Brigade soldiers Thomas Peters and Murphy…

Resource Review: National Geographic’s Field Guide to Birds

Ronda Bowen, November 15, 2018December 21, 2021

One of my favorite activities to undertake with my kids is heading out into nature and taking a look at what different forms of flora and fauna we see. I’ve been meaning to build a collection of field guides so I can help my kids to identify the different things…

Resource Review: The Splendor of Birds

Ronda Bowen, November 12, 2018December 13, 2021

I have a confession: I don’t like birds. I mean, I think they’re absolutely beautiful creatures, but for some reason, they terrify me. That said, every one of my kids has been fascinated with birds – and with good reason. They fly, they’re beautiful, and they’re covered in feathers. National Geographic’s…

Resource Review: National Geographic’s Space Atlas

Ronda Bowen, November 8, 2018December 13, 2021

My kids love space and all things planets and astronauts. I suspect a lot of kids feel the same (I know I did as a kid). When I was offered the opportunity to review National Geographic’s Space Atlas, I was thrilled to do so. This volume is nothing less than stellar….

Book Review: When Women Ruled the World by Kara Cooney

Ronda Bowen, November 6, 2018December 19, 2018

Kara Cooney’s volume, When Women Ruled the World, explores the lives and regimes of six female pharaohs. I think this book can best be summed up by this paragraph in the introduction: In the fifth century B.C., thousands of years after her lifetime, the Greek historian Herodotus wrote about a certain…

Book Review: Tasting Italy

Ronda Bowen, November 6, 2018November 29, 2018

There’s something about pasta and tomato sauce and cheese that makes for a supremely delicious combination. When I was offered the opportunity to review National Geographic and America’s Test Kitchen’s Tasting Italy, I was thrilled. Not only am I a long-time subscriber to Cook’s Magazine, This cookbooks-meets-travel-journalism book does not disappoint. Recipes are…

Book Review: The Spite Game by Anna Snoekstra

Ronda Bowen, November 2, 2018November 2, 2018

Bullies.  I was bullied pretty ruthlessly, particularly in junior high. In high school, it wasn’t as bad because I was pretty focused on just getting what I needed to do done, and getting out as soon as possible, so I graduated shortly after my 17th birthday. I started junior college…

Resource Review: Visual Atlas of the World

Ronda Bowen, November 1, 2018December 13, 2021

Every household should have an up-to-date-atlas, especially if that household is a homeschooling household. Recently, I received National Geographic’s Visual Atlas of the World to review on this blog. The book is rather large (as an atlas should be) and it comes with a slip box to help keep it looking nice….

Book Review: Journeys of a Lifetime

Ronda Bowen, October 31, 2018October 31, 2018

Do you have a travel bucket list? I do, but it’s non-specific. It would be cool to go to see a baseball game in every major league ballpark. I’d love to do one of many running vacations that are out there. It would be awesome to go to Alsace, France…
