Non-Traditional Places to Look for Wine

by Ronda BowenLeave a Comment on Non-Traditional Places to Look for Wine

A lot of the time, people pick up wine in one of three places: at the grocery store, at a winery, or at a wine cellar store. However, there are a lot of other places to look for wine including food co-ops, corner stores, and discount grocery stores. While some of these …

Happy Birthday, Julia Child!

by Ronda BowenLeave a Comment on Happy Birthday, Julia Child!

It’s Julia Child‘s birthday! She’s one of my favorite pop culture figures, and she’s a huge inspiration. To be honest, when I make her recipes I will scale back on the butter – in a big way. However, the end result is still a spectacularly awesome meal. In honor of her birthday, I …

2011 Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Horse Heaven Chenin Blanc

by Ronda BowenLeave a Comment on 2011 Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Horse Heaven Chenin Blanc

This lovely wine had citrus notes to it. The wine was created at the Horse Heaven Vineyard, and we purchased it from Chateau Ste. Michelle when we did the winery tour. The Horse Heaven Chenin Blanc was light and easy drinking. It makes a great summer wine. The only thing about this wine I …

Mandatory Pregnancy Testing?

by Ronda BowenLeave a Comment on Mandatory Pregnancy Testing?

Delhi Charter School in Delhi, Louisiana has been the focus of many blog commentaries. According to Think Progress, the school has had a lot of pregnant girls. However, the school charter forbids pregnant girls from attending this K-12 school. In order to uphold that policy, the school requires pregnancy testing of anyone suspected to be pregnant. …

Creating a Cleaning Schedule

by Ronda Bowen1 Comment on Creating a Cleaning Schedule

Even with a glass (or bottle!) of Malbec at hand, housework is much easier if you create a cleaning schedule. What works best for me is to break down my home’s rooms and then assign each room to a day of the week. I then create a checklist of cleaning chores that need …

Pets make the world go round. It’s such a great thing to have pets. We have three cats. Lady – the kitty pictured to the right, Stripes – Lady’s brother and a total glutton,  and LuLu – a tiny runt of a kitty who is also much older than she looks. We want to get …

A couple months ago, we visited the Bertagna Son Kissed Vineyards. We were quite taken with a few of their wines – one of them being the unique Sangiovese Rose, which almost had a sparkling quality to it. So, we had this wonderful wine hanging out in our cellar for a bit. When it …

All The Shootings

by Ronda BowenLeave a Comment on All The Shootings

It feels as though there have been a lot of public shootings lately. How scary is it that on July 20th, a bunch of people went to a theater to watch a movie, and then their evening turned into a traumatic event. I cannot imagine all the emotions at all, and I feel …

The Best Brush for Kids Who Still Hate Getting The The Best Brush for Kids Who Still Hate Getting Their Hair Done (But at Least It’s Faster)

My four-year-old hates having her hair brushed. I don't think we've ever had a session where she doesn't cry. This reality has me on a quest for any hair products or tools that can help me tame tangles with fewer tears. To make matters worse, she has thick, fine hair that tangles when she moves. Often (perhaps too often) our solution has been to throw it up in a messy bun and go....

It's in a tin-can-urn-thing on my bookshelf in my family room (don't get me started on how weird that is.) I already know it's weird. I don't know where to put him. How does a young woman cope when she cannot speak the truth?

When nineteen-year-old Lenore experiences sexual assault while studying abroad in Italy, her entire world shifts. Survival becomes the focus of her daily life, physical illness grabs control of her body, and no one can free her from her pain. A ghost of herself, she takes the path of denial, believing it’s the only way to protect her loved ones and herself from her harsh reality.

On her journey toward peace, she assumes the expected roles of mother and wife, but a traumatic diagnosis puts her at a crossroads. She must start living the life she wants or roam her days as a victim in the chaos of fear. Lenore’s escape through travel allows her to reconcile the imprisonment she’s suffered over the years.

However, when another family tragedy strikes, Lenore understands she must finally come to terms with the silence she’s kept. But what if one incident that happened decades ago is too destructive, too deep to be excavated? Will she be able to find herself in the rubble? Or will she be lost forever?
My birthday was not yesterday but the week before. My birthday was not yesterday but the week before. I got to go to lunch with one of my good friends, then my husband and kids took me to @halfpricebooks to pick out books and @loweshomeimprovement to pick out some plants. And then we headed off to dinner.

This is one of the things I picked up from the bookstore. It looks pretty cool, lots of concrete actions to take for those who want to change things. Some of them are simple, some of them take more effort.

Just thought I'd share.

Today's guest post comes from Joaquin Miranda of B Today's guest post comes from Joaquin Miranda of Build & Renovate. As global awareness of sustainability and carbon footprint grows, it's crucial to build your home's surroundings to be resilient and low on energy consumption. Adopting energy-efficient landscaping practices is one legitimate way to do that. The residential sector accounts for approximately 20% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, mostly from fossil fuels used to heat, cool, and power such built environments. ...

When friends and loved ones (let alone strangers) share their big scary hair audacious plans with you, are you someone who cheers them on, or do you start up with all the ways things might go wrong -- or worse tell them outright that it's not possible?

Here's a post about why we should keep our fears about what others are doing to ourselves.

Laughing is Forever is my second book. And while it’s gritty, rhythmic, dark and dangerous it’s also fun, quirky, and inquisitive. Topics range from growing up in the Deep South to questioning the mainstream narrative of how it all . . . came to be. I want people who don’t read much and who hate poetry (the largest demographic) to give this collection a chance and fall in love with books by reading something that they can relate to and/or be awed by. Laughing is Forever is a standalone book, a brand-new beast, but follows in the footsteps of Blameforest in the sense that it’s reinventing what poetry can be. And hopefully inspiring folks to take risks with their own work and stand out from the maddening crowd.
